The crossing at a glance
Marina South Pier - Kusu Island is the ferry to the temple island among Singapore's Southern Islands. Singapore Island Cruise is the only operator and sails several times a day, from the morning to the late afternoon; the crossing takes about 45 minutes. The boats run a loop from Marina South Pier via Lazarus and Kusu back to Marina South Pier. There is no passport control: Kusu belongs to Singapore.
Terminal and getting there
The boats leave from Marina South Pier, 31 Marina Coastal Drive. Take the MRT to Marina South Pier and use Exit A; the Island Cruise counter is a minute's walk away, the orange counter behind the security check. Arrive at least 25 minutes before departure. The last ferry back
On weekdays, the last ferry from Kusu back to Marina South Pier leaves at 16:15. There is no overnight stay on Kusu and no camping, so the last boat sets the end of your visit. There is also no direct link from Kusu to St John's or Lazarus.
On Kusu Island
Kusu is known for the Da Bo Gong temple, built in 1923, and for the 152 steps up to the keramats, shrines where visitors pray for prosperity, marriage, health and harmony. The island is managed by the Singapore Land Authority: there are barbecue pits, open fires are not allowed, and you take your rubbish back with you. Pets are not allowed on Kusu. There is no medical facility and no shop on the island.
Pilgrimage season
Every year in the ninth month of the lunar calendar, roughly between September and November, thousands of pilgrims visit Kusu. During the season the ferry runs more often, weekends are the busiest days, and a weekday visit is the calmer choice. The dates follow the lunar calendar and change every year.
